So today I repeatedly and vigorously pushed on a "pull" door in front of a large group of people.

It´s ok. It took me in the ballpark of 3 weeks to figre out the difference between tire and empuje. Even though they make sense in my head. And empuje totally sounds like push. Not to mention I knew both of the words before I got here. They just look different when written on doors.
